fluid sculpture & clothing by casual profanity

March 17, 2009

As a member of the fashioning technology community on, I often have a look on the new posts. Some are very interesting and obviously some aren’t, but  what I’ve seen today  captured all my attention. Fluid sculpture is a project made by Casual Profanity (I don’t know the real name of the author). The project consists of a knitted transparent plastic pipe in which colored fluids are running through with the help of a machine.Vodpod videos no longer available. The result is just beautiful, and address some themes that I hold dear, as transparency and permeability in textile. The textiles are so much more permeable that we think and let go through inner and outer elements such as heat  and liquids. This project demonstrates also that we can imagine dynamic textiles in so many ways. We’ve already seen projects with thermo- and photo -chromic inks or displays embedded in fabric that make a pattern look more fluid and “ever transforming”, but fluid sculpture, in a more atavic way, talks about fluid exchanges and our deep vitality.
